Description

James Henry Gray, shown in the photo, was born in Calvert County, Maryland, in 1865, the year the Civil War ended. He and his wife, Eliza Colby Gray, first lived in neighboring Berwyn, where their eldest son, William, was born in 1896. The family moved to Lakeland soon thereafter. Gray, called "Pop" by his family, was on the ministerial staff at Dent Chapel A.M.E. Church in Bladensburg, Maryland. In his later years, he worshipped with family members at Lakeland’s Embry African Methodist Episcopal Church. “Pop would make us have prayer before we went to church,” his granddaughter Jean Gray Matthews remembers. “We’d be kneeling on the living room floor, and Pop would pray so long, we’d feel like we’d already been to church!” The couple’s descendants remain in the community and maintain active membership at Embry A.M.E. Church. (Courtesy of Jean Gray Matthews)
