Description

Charles Hamlett and his first wife, Eva Brooks Hamlett, are shown in this photograph, around 1930. He came from New Jersey to Lakeland and married Eva Brooks in the late 1920s. She was the daughter of one of Lakeland’s earliest African American residents, John and Maggie Brooks. They built a house near her parent’s home in the area of the Lake Artemesia. The home became a victim of urban renewal. As with many early Lakeland families, the Hamletts have descendants in the community. (Courtesy of Mary Hamlett Harding)
