Description

Benjamin Robert Hicks, shown in the photo, was born on March 24, 1873. In 1900, he migrated from Calvert County, Maryland, to seek employment. He settled in Lakeland,where he met and married Annie L. Terry. She was born in 1893 in the Gainesville-Centerville area of Virginia. They raised three children: Ethel, Madeline and Maurice. Hicks was a founder of Embry A.M.E. Chapel and a deacon of the church. He was employed as a member of a crew which maintained the tracks of the nearby Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. Annie was a homemaker and laundress.
